Mission News ........... Kim Gasaway Ministry Team Leader
Are We Aware?
We blissfully went to bed last night unaware of the turmoil in Kingston, Jamaica. Gunfire, buildings burning, the police garrison ransacked and destroyed, hundreds of people killed in violence over the struggle with the government and a Jamaican drug kingpin who is being sought for extradition to the United States. There is even fear that this violence will spread throughout the island nation. You may have slept well last night but I promise you Rhoan Wallace did not.
If we are to be people of the Bible we need to weep when our fellow Christians weep. We also need to be aware and pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ when they are suffering. Lennox Duran, a fellow worker with Rhoan, has an office on the same block as the police garrison that was destroyed and people gunned down. Penwood Christian Church, where Rhoan works, is in the middle of the gang district.
Do we pray for him? We may say we didn’t know, but I say we were unaware. How do we become aware? You all know missionaries who you care about. Keep up with the news on them. Most of you have internet access. All cities of the world have newspapers online. For instance in Kingston there is the Daily Gleaner. Weekly open this newspaper and see the needs of the city. Pray about them. Rhoan is.
Awareness is part of being missional. You ought to be aware of the world our missionaries live in, but also we need to be aware of the issues people in our community face every day. It’s only then that we can begin to pray and love the way Jesus desires. Then we vest interest in God’s mission, to seek and save the lost.
We are on the Path to a New Mission Field
As many of you know, Diane, Drew and I are going to Los Angeles to begin a new work in the inner city. This is a unique opportunity to work in urban missions and we covet your prayers. As I type this I am in South Central LA and have a police helicopter flying over head with a search light on the next block. While we will be living in a slightly better neighborhood in the northeast section of LA it is still our prayer that we are given the grace to speak to the heart of the people of LA about the life changing Gospel of Jesus and that our Lord will watch over our safety. Just yesterday I shared with two young men and have hope for this to bear fruit.
You will be in our prayers. I know this is easy to say, kind of like ‘have a nice day’ but we truly mean it. We have served with you for 9 years, wow! God has done some amazing things in those years and he still has more in store for your future! We love you and will miss you all.
As Paul suggests, we are partners in the Gospel. Pray for us. If you are ever inclined, come and visit us in LA. If you don’t all come at once we should be able to provide a bed. Mi casa es su casa.
May the Lord bless you and make your life abound in faith, hope and love. Especially love.Directory Changes
